10 Minutes with:
Hafeeza Kamal for Medrec |
What brought you to Medrec?
I'm a soon to be grad and was looking for an established company with values and missions in line with my own to start my career with. I love that Medrec is the best at what they do, and I'm so excited to be part of the team.
Tell us about your family.
My family is originally from the Caribbean, but I was born and raised here in Houston. I am the eldest of 3 children. I have a brother (age 15) and sister
(age 19). I have a lot of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Our family is huge, loud, and tons of fun to be around.
What is something that most people do not know about you?
I love sushi! If I could live off of it I would! |
Where did you grow up?
Houston, TX! (woohoo!)
How would your family and friends describe you?
Outgoing, tons of energy, personable, and kind hearted. |
 |
What do you like best about your job, and/or current assignment?
I like the fact that I get to aid therapists to advance their careers by working with an amazing team to find them the perfect job.
What do you do when you are not at work?
Workout, dinner and dancing with my friends, catching up on old movies.
What is a job experience you will never forget?
A patient's husband came to me before his wife was discharged from the hospital. She had a stroke and was on the rehab section of the floor for about 3 months. He told me that the quality of care that I gave his wife was unlike what they had ever experienced with anyone else. A wonderful bond grew between that family and me while their mother was in the hospital, and it was a great feeling knowing they were happy with the treatment she received. I knew I was doing something right.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
GREECE! It's a beautiful country with a rich history.
Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I'm very excited to be part of the Medrec team! |

A Silver Lining for all of our Therapists |
| |
| We really got a scare with the most recent legislation. Passage of HR 6331 - the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act was a roller coaster. The initial defeat in the Senate. The rally and eventual passage in both the House and the Senate and then a Veto from President Bush. Then on July 15th, the House holding another vote to override the Veto. WOW... what a story... and it ended well for our industry. The scary reality was that the cap went into effect (without exceptions) for 15 days (July 1-15) while they discussed and voted. Click here for an in-depth description. |

So why is this such good news? Other than the obvious, it's good news in cloudy times. Medrec is healthy and growing (20% growth in our 2nd quarter 2008), but there are a lot of folks in our country that are not enjoying growth. Instead, many folks are seeing quite the opposite. Several industry analysts call the Medical profession "recession proof". But I'm not so sure that's 100% true. First of all, the price of gas and groceries are impacting everyone, me and my family included. Second, elective surgeries are down and fewer are choosing to rehabilitate on their own versus going to a therapist. Third, I believe we are all connected, and it may not hurt now, but it will hurt. As therapists, you all make above average pay and enjoy employment in a market where jobs are plentiful. You may not feel the pinch yet, but it surely is coming. I think prudence with financial matters is paramount right now. Wait on that flat screen or new car. Let's get some stability in the marketplace.
So, the silver lining is the passage of HR 6331... helping to insulate all of us in a downturn in our niche.

A Few Words from Human Resources |
With the addition of vision insurance to our list of benefits, we are focusing on eye health this month!
Take Care of you Eyes!
What should I do if I get something in my eye?
If you get something in your eye, NEVER EVER rub your eyes! Eyes are sensitive and can be scratched easily. Always ask an adult to help you.
How can I protect my eyes when I play sports?
When playing sports, always use the proper eye protection, such as goggles, helmets, or visors.
Why should I never look into the sun?
Your eyes are made to see only certain kinds of light, and the sun is just too bright for your eyes to handle. You should never look into the sun because its brightness will damage the light-sensitive part inside your eye called the retina.
What kinds of foods should I eat to make my eyes stronger?
Milk. Drink lots of milk every day. It’s full of important vitamins. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins too! Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and carrots, and fruits such as apples, pears and oranges are very, very good for your eyes, and you should get in the habit of eating some of these every day. And if you don’t think you like a particular vegetable, you should try at least two bites, one for each eye!
Is lighting fireworks safe for my eyes?
Definitely not! You should never light fireworks. They’re very dangerous! Public displays of fireworks are much safer.
What does 20/20 vision mean?
If you have 20/20 vision (as rated by an eye care professional), that means you can see something clearly at 20 feet that you should be able to see at that distance. So, if your vision is 20/200, which means you can see something clearly at 20 feet that you should be able to see at 200 feet.
What is eye strain?
Eye strain is what happens if you make your eyes work really hard for a really long time. Your eyes are controlled by muscles just like you have all over your body. If you use them too much in the wrong way, the muscles in your eyes will get damaged. So always have plenty of lights on when you read, watch TV, use the computer, or do anything that you use your eyes for. Proper lighting reduces eye strain. And whenever you watch TV or use the computer, take little breaks every 15 minutes or so to rest your eyes.
Will my eyes be affected if I don’t get enough sleep?
Your eyes will definitely be affected. Eyes need lots of rest to work their best, so be sure to get plenty of sleep every night.
Do I really need to visit the eye doctor?
Oh yes! The eye doctor is very important because he can let you know how your eyes develop as you grow. Visit your eye doctor regularly for check-ups, at least once every two years. People over the age of 60 should see their eye doctor every year!

*50 Cool Summer Destinations in 50 States* |
With the airlines adding high ‘fuel surcharges’ to the cost of expensive peak-season plane tickets, and an exchange rate situation that has gone from sad to downright embarrassing, many Americans are working on a Plan B for their vacations this summer. Okay, so spending two weeks skipping around Europe might be best saved for another year, but what to do?
If you get creative you’ll realize there are many ways of doing something new on your vacation this year. Those of us in the United States are lucky enough to live in one of the most amazing countries on Earth in terms of varied sights and natural beauty, but few of us have really explored some of the better attractions in our own parts of the country.
