10 Minutes with:
Gail Wagner for Medrec

What brought you to Medrec?
One of my professors from college had done PRN with Medrec. He said he never had any problems and recommended the company. I was tired of going to the same place everyday and wanted a change. Changing placements gives me a great opportunity to meet people and I'm hoping to do some traveling.

Tell us about your family.
I am single so I don't have a family of my own yet, but my immediate family includes me, an older sister, and my parents. I do have a dog that I consider part of my family.

What is something that most people do not know about you?
I enjoy playing poker with friends. No gambling, just fun.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town in Texas called Yoakum.

How would your family and friends describe you?
I would guess they'd say I am a generally happy, caring, thoughtful, and outgoing person.

What do you like best about your job, and/or current assignment?
My current assignment is with Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. I like the patient caseload and the staff is willing to help.

What do you do when you are not at work?
I enjoy outdoor activities and playing sports. I recently signed up for the San Antonio Sports and Social Club. Also, I recently moved into a house, so I spend a lot of time with getting everything together.

What made you want to become a SLP?
I went several days job-shadowing different careers my senior year of high school. I went to an SLP and had a great day. Also, my sister is a nurse and highly recommended it.

What is a job experience you will never forget?
Each job has its own experiences. My favorite job experience each time is telling a patient that their hard work paid off and they can eat again after being fed by a PEG tube.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would like to travel Europe, mainly just for sight-seeing.

Anything else you would like us to know about you?
Not that I can think of, thank you.

Message from the President
Providing back to the community is paramount at Medrec. Last week we worked out a deal with Rocky Mountain University (Provo, Utah), Hardin Simmons University (Abilene, Texas) and the Harris County Hospital District (Houston, Texas) to hold our second community education event in Texas entitled "Evidence-Based Practice: Enhancing Clinical Excellence in a Multidisciplinary Environment." This program involves PTs, OTs, SLPs, and RNs with a curriculum designed to help all of them work in concert to rehabilitate the patient as fast as possible.

They use "Evidence" of progress to lead their way. The Harris County Hospital District will be hosting the event at the Ben Taub Hospital auditorium, in the Houston Medical Center, on Saturday, November 1st. We can accommodate two hundred attendees at that location. Medrec is bringing this to the Houston community with the intent to run the event at cost... providing a top notch educational experience (and 6.5 hours approved CEUs) for under $100. For more information, go to www.medrec-pt.com/education.

Your Medrec Family is built to service you and your career.  We remain dedicated to getting on the same page with you and then synchronizing your career and your life.  It’s easy; it’s Medrec!

A Few Words from Human Resources

Pack your Street Sense when you pack your bags!

Don't leave your Street Sense at home when you travel.
Follow these steps for a safe, fun vacation.

#1. Use traveler's checks and credit cards instead of cash whenever possible.
Take only those credit cards you need.

#2. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps.
Carry a wallet in an inside coat or front trouser pocket. Better still; wear a money pouch underneath your clothing. Be alert for pickpockets in crowded areas like airline, bus, and train terminals and major tourist attractions.

#3. Don't look distracted or lost.
Walk confidently and stay alert to what's happening around you. Stay alert for staged mishaps, like someone bumping into you or spilling a drink, a stranger offering to snap a family photo, or a pedestrian jumping in front of the car and falling so you leap to investigate.

Before you go...

#4. Plan ahead.
If you're traveling by car, get maps and plan your route. Have the car and tires checked out before you leave. Leave copies of the numbers of your passport, driver's license, credit cards, and traveler's checks with a friend in case you need to replace them.

#5. Put lights and a radio on timers to create the illusion that someone's home.
Leave shades, blinds, and curtains in normal positions. Stop the mail and newspapers, or ask a neighbor to take them in.

Once you're there...

#6. When you check into a hotel, check out the locks.
Look for deadbolts or solid doors with peepholes. FYI... The new coded electronic cards are safer than ordinary key locks. Don't display guest room keys in public or carelessly leave them on restaurant tables, at the swimming pool, or other places where they can be easily stolen.

#7. Lock belongings in your suitcase or keep them out of sight.
Keep your bags close to you at all times.

#8. Ask the hotel or motel staff or police about the neighborhood's safety.
Ask what areas to avoid. Immediately report any crime to the police.

*Independence Day, July 4*

On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britan, and Democracy was born. Every day thousands of people leave their homeland to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their American Dream.

The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings. Through the internet we are learning about and communicating with people of different nations, with different languages and different races throughout the world. Bringing the world closer with understanding and knowledge can only benefit all nations.

We invite all nations to celebrate with Americans online this Fourth of July.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!
