10 Minutes with:
Ray Shafer OT for Medrec

What brought you to Medrec?
After being a Therapy Director for years, out of all the agencies I have worked for, I liked working with Medrec the most because of their commitment and professionalism. Once I was going to do agency work again, Medrec was my first thought.

Tell us about your family.
I am a third generation Texan – can’t imagine living in any other state. I have been in a relationship for eight years.

What is something that most people do not know about you?
The only adult nickname I have is because of Medrec. Years ago when Steve Martinez and I started working together, he called me Ray Ray. It has stayed with me ever since.

Where did you grow up?
Texas – born in Pecos, lived in Abilene and ended my elementary years in Beaumont, Tx.

What do you like best about your job, and/or current assignment?
The diversity of the type of patients I see in acute care. Any day it could be anything!

What do you do when you are not at work?
I am part of a Saturday morning Breakfast Club. Early every Saturday we meet at a new restaurant and have a 2-3 hour breakfast. I love to travel, and I walk 1-2 miles a day.

What made you want to become an OT?
When I was in my second year of collage, I got Bell’s Palsy. While receiving therapy for my face, I saw all three types of therapists, and I liked OT.

What is a job experience you will never forget?
Working at Herman Hospital in Houston, I learned so much from my patients about strength and perseverance.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Hawaii. I have always wanted to go, but I never had a chance.

Message from the President
At the beginning of the year, I wrote about innovation and how it’s now a core value at Medrec.  I believe that nothing will ever take the place of human and voice contact. The innovation that we seek is to make our interactions more meaningful and more efficient.  As a few of you may know, we have just completed our fully automated and online “Medrec Application & Paperwork System” (MAPS). This custom built solution was a 6-month process headed by Michael Tubbs.  MAPS saves each new employee a tremendous amount of time and effort when signing up with Medrec.  Employees and applicants can log in at their leisure to update and/or change information.  Feedback early on is that MAPS is the most user friendly application on the market, and that is exactly where innovation and Medrec complement each other.

Another major innovation for Medrec is paperless timecards, and we have been underway now for over a full year.  We’ve worked out hundreds of bugs.  In a recent survey, 74% of our therapists prefer our paperless timecards, vs. 11% that prefer paper timecards.  15% are still undecided.  The main benefits that respondents noted were not having to hunt for their supervisor for a signature, the convenience of completing the timecard when they wanted, and timesaver.  We realize that it’s not perfect by any means.  The things we are committed to fixing ASAP are (1) Provide a better tutorial and (2) Make it “Mac” friendly.  So we hear you… its good, but not perfect… yet.

Your Medrec Family is built to service you and your career.  We remain dedicated to getting on the same page with you and then synchronizing your career and your life.  It’s easy; it’s Medrec!

A Few Words from Human Resources

JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH!

Don’t Fall for Cancer Myths
We have nearly limitless cancer information at our fingertips, but sorting fact from fiction still can be a challenge.

Do you recognize these myths?

Myth 1: Surgery spreads cancer cells
Not true. Surgeons know how to take tissue samples and remove tumors without spreading cancer. Surgery is often an essential-and lifesaving-part of a cancer treatment plan.

Myth 2: A positive attitude is all you need to fight cancer
Positive attitudes help people face cancer and treatment-but there’s no evidence that attitude cures, causes, or affects cancer.

Myth 3: Deodorants cause breast cancer

Researchers haven’t found a link between breast cancer and antiperspirants, deodorants or shaving.

Myth 4: Artificial sweeteners cause bladder cancer
Research by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t shown a link between cancer and saccharin, aspartame, or other artificial sweeteners.

Myth 5: Hair shampoos contain cancer-causing substances
Shampoos can contain powerful detergents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate. However, these are not known carcinogens.

Myth 6: Smokeless tobacco is safe
The use of chewing tobacco or snuff increases the risk of cancer of the lips, tongue, checks, gums, and the floor and roof of the mouth.

Myth 7: Lipsticks contain cancer-causing lead
Some coloring agents approved by the FDA and used in lipsticks contain small amounts of lead. However, the levels allowed are not a health problem.

Myth 8: Cell phones cause cancer

There is no scientific evidence to support such claims. Distracted drivers using cell phones are a much bigger safety concern.

If you have questions about cancer, talk with your doctor. He or she can provide reliable cancer information.

Insurance Paperwork

Per current insurance carrier regulations, anyone who is terminated from insurance for more than 30 days will be required to complete a new insurance application before we can provide them insurance benefits again.

Also, once insurance paperwork has been sent to you, it is your responsibility to get it back to HR in a timely manner.  If the signed paperwork comes back to us 2 weeks after the assignment start date, then benefits will be effective 2 weeks after the start date.  We can’t backdate the benefits start date.
