10 Min with Carla Zafereo Branch Manager Travel Division

What brought you to Medrec?
I was very impressed by the stability of the company and the number of years Medrec has been in business. The company has an incredible reputation as a leader in the medical staffing industry. I was also very impressed with Peter and his goals for the Travel Division and Medrec.

Tell us about your family.
I am a very lucky lady to be married to the most wonderful man in the world. Joe and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in February. Joe is a VP in the Corporate Properties Group for Wells Fargo Bank and he has been with WF for 37 years. We have 2 sons, Brad and Doug, who both live in Austin. Brad is in Real Estate and Doug owns his own Mortgage Lending Company. Doug is married to his high school sweetheart, Jessica, who is like a daughter to us. Doug and Jess have 4 beautiful children, Chandler, Preston, Cameron, Kennedy, that are the light of our lives. We call them the “Fab 4” and they quite the entertainment package.

What is something that most people do not know about you?
I grew up in Midland, TX and went to school with the Bush boys. We attended lots of kid’s parties at the Bush house with the President and first lady. The Bushs’ had a beautiful welcoming home, and they always made everyone feel at home.

Where did you grow up?
I was born in Amarillo, Texas and we immediately moved to Midland, TX. My dad was transferred to Harlingen, Texas when I was in my junior year in high school, and I graduated from Harlingen High School. Moving in my junior year was really tough but I made friends fast and ended up having a really super senior year.

How would your family and friends describe you?
My family would describe me as the powerhouse of the family. I am the organizer, planner, leader, and the one that makes sure my family is taken care of. My boys would say that I am the heart of the family, and that I have the biggest softest heart when it comes to them. My friends would describe me as a good friend that they can depend on for anything. They all see me as some sort of super woman with all that I am involved in and have been able to accomplish.

What do you like best about your job, and/or current assignment?
My team is my favorite part of my job at Medrec. They are all super as is all of the staff in the company. I am excited to be a part of the Medrec team and anxious to be part of our taking the Travel Division to the top producers in the company.

What do you do when you are not at work?
I love to spend quality time with my family doing anything and everything. We all have such a good time together, and we try to spend as much time as possible together. We usually take all our vacations together, and we have so much fun planning our trips and all the activities wherever we go.

What made you want to become the Travel Division Manager at Medrec?
I have 8 years of experience working with and staffing all the Allied modalities. I have always preferred the therapies because of the professionalism of the therapist.

What is a job experience you will never forget?
Several years ago when I was a RVP in a national staffing firm, I was able to land a state wide account that resulted in billings the first year of over $6 million dollars. We kept this account for 3 years and it grew in revenue 20 to 30% year over year.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
We love to travel in the USA. There is so much to see in each state in the USA and so many interesting places to see and things to do in each state. We have traveled nationally but still prefer to stay stateside. We have spent a great deal of time traveling in California and Florida and still have places we have not seen. Orlando is our favorite place to go over the Christmas holidays.

Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I love being part of the Medrec team, and I am looking forward to contributing to our continued success.

September 2008… Are You Vexed?

I can’t think of a time when I have been more vexed! September was absolutely unbelievable. Some of my anxiety is self inflicted but most has to do with things completely out of my control. With all the recent social turmoil, I suspect I’m not the only one feeling vexed right now.

I moved 5 times with the military, and let me tell you, all 5 moves combined pale in comparison to this one corporate office move. The amazing thing is that Nancy Thoss our Controller, planned so much in advance that the actual move was a cinch… no irritation… just anxiety. The irritation comes from the computers, telephones, and the still un-delivered new furniture. I feel like a carnie with my office in bubble wrap and boxes and working on a folding table. It’s amazing how we are hostage to our computers and our telephones! The Dallas/Fort Worth Office went up with a snap of the fingers with Becki Mitchell at the helm. Again, not without anxiety… but certainly with computer irritation! Moving our servers off-site was a blessing and curse. The blessing was that when we moved, the Dallas & Houston offices never went off-line. The curse was in “moving the cheese”. Re-training everyone… with all of the “changes” some really thought the end of the world was near. Hopefully, we are now out of the Armageddon stage.

Out of our Control: “IKE” (screamed loudly as if being poked with a hot poker) was/is a disaster. Although our office was only down for a week and we sustained minimal water damage at our office, our employees (contract therapists and internal folks) were distressed beyond comprehension. The impact of Mother Nature is dumbfounding indeed. The city of Houston is still picking up the pieces left in the wake of Ike. Several of our clients are either down or gone. Roughly ½ of our business was wiped out. Vexing! Our ECONOMY… what is going on! Credit this, crunch that, Fannie/Freddie here, Wachovia there… I’m flabbergasted. We are all hearing the average American hasn’t felt it yet, but it’s coming. We’re all thinking “oh my gosh… what’s coming”! The response, “we don’t know, but it’s coming!” Who’s not vexed about that one! POLITICS are out of control also. I’m convinced that we are at the super-power turning point in our country. Our foreign policy has been ravaged for the last 16 years and our image, stature and most importantly power at the negotiating table has been decimated. Our domestic issues such as our economy, healthcare and energy are all wildly out of control. And all we hear from the candidates is more rhetoric and partisan politics. I think it’s a race to see who can dramatize our country’s woes the best as opposed to who can build consensus on issues to solve hard problems. I pray we get a president that gets us back on the right track… but I’m not sure either of the candidates will put the country ahead of their deep pocketed lobbyists. All politics are Vexing. And lastly, those DALLAS COWBOYS… say no more… VEXING!

So if you’re as vexed from September as I am…join me in re-grouping for October. Circle the wagons and shake off the scratches and bruises from September. The silver lining… after a month like September, October will surely be phenomenal!

Among Us!

Early Saturday morning, Sept 12, Hurricane Ike dealt a powerful blow to our fellow clients, co-workers and therapists in the Houston / Galveston area . Afterwards, as thousands grappled with the effects of post Ike – lack of gas, power, running water – the following therapists were able to minimize down time and assist their contracted facilities in becoming fully operational as quickly as possible:
•Katherine Williamson – Kindred Healthcare, Jacinto City
•Jeffery McCardle – Kindred Healthcare, Jacinto City

•Myrlynn Bowman – Sava Senior Care of Cypresswood

These individuals were presented with Hurricane Hero Certificates and Walmart gift cards for demonstrating outstanding dedication and commitment to the Houston community
